Can a fluffy robot really replace a cat or dog? My weird, emotional week with an AI pet | Artificial intelligence (AI) | The Guardian

Japan’s 125 million people appear to have the emotional and financial capacity for pets and robots, but less so for children. According to a 2023 survey, Japan has more pets – including 7.1 million dogs and 8.9 million cats – than it has children under 15 (14.7 million). I don’t envisage fighting back tears on the day I give him back, but I am sure there will be a twinge of regret that I wasn’t able to see him develop his personality. He isn’t a cat or a dog – or a hamster, for that matter – but he is more than the sum of his working parts.Casio says Moflin can develop its own personality and build a rapport with its owner – and it doesn’t need food, exercise or a litter tray. But is it essentially comforting or alienating? It looks faintly like one half of a small pair of very fluffy slippers. It squeaks and wriggles and nestles in the palm of my hand, black eyes hidden beneath a mop of silvery-white fur. It weighs about the same as a tin of soup. It doesn’t need to be fed or walked and it doesn’t use a litter tray; it’s guaranteed not to leave “gifts” on my doorstep.Pet sounds … Justin McCurry at the Tokyo Tower with his Moflin, which squeaks when he strokes it.

Mine came with a stand alone remote control as well as a beacon that clips to your waist and the dog will follow the beacon. This is a ridiculous robot, with today's technology. You'd expect and should get more. This does nothing different nore better than a 160.00 robot pet dog.【Intelligent Obstacle Avoidance】Go2 is equipped with Unitree's self-developed 4D LiDAR sensor L1, which has a 360x90° hemispherical ultra-wide-angle perception capability and an extremely low blind zone. AI That ‘Hears’ Heart Disease May Help Vets Diagnose Dogs | NVIDIA Technical Blog

A new machine-learning algorithm that listens to digital heartbeat data could help veterinarians diagnose murmurs and early-stage heart disease in dogs. About 10% of dogs and up to 75% of senior dogs in the US develop heart disease. Vets typically find and assess heart murmurs—a critical indicator of heart disease—during physical exams, listening for irregularities in how the heart chambers pump.Echocardiograms, or heart ultrasounds, provide a detailed view of heart structure and functions, helping detect abnormalities and determine the severity or stage of the disease. This imaging is valuable for ongoing monitoring and assessing treatments. However, it’s costly, requires a specialist, and often means the dog must stay with the vet for the day—adding stress to an already taxed heart. To bridge this gap, the researchers used electronic stethoscopes, which are increasingly available to veterinarians, to make digital recordings of heart sounds. They collected audio recordings from 756 dogs with and without heart disease, each of which underwent a full physical exam and echocardiogram.According to the study, the researchers plan to deploy the algorithm in general veterinary practices to assess its performance in real-world settings. They plan to expand the dataset to improve accuracy and reliability, particularly for dogs in the early stages of heart disease.

Who let the robo-dogs out?Sareena Dayaram Feb. 26, 2024 7:50 a.m. PT ... Who let the dogs out? Tecno's Dynamic 1 robotic dog takes inspiration from the German shepherd.Although it doesn't look quite as friendly as a real pooch, it's supposed to offer a glimpse into a future, as envisioned by Tecno. A dystopian-sounding future where people presumably live with robotic dogs, which are marketed as requiring less upkeep than a real canine, but still come with companionship benefits.Robot dogs haven't quite made their way into our homes (and hearts) yet, but that hasn't stoped makers from spending millions to develop high-tech canines. In 2021, Chinese phone-maker Xiaomi debuted its inaugural Cyberdog, complete with USB-C recharging. It's since followed that up with the CyberDog 2.

Generative AI taught a robot dog to scramble around a new environment | MIT Technology Review

A new system could help train robots entirely in generated worlds. Researchers used the system, called LucidSim, to train a robot dog in parkour, getting it to scramble over a box and climb stairs even though it had never seen any real-world data. The approach demonstrates how helpful generative AI could be when it comes to teaching robots to do challenging tasks. Now there’s a potentially better option: a new system that uses generative AI models in conjunction with a physics simulator to develop virtual training grounds that more accurately mirror the physical world.Teaching robots to navigate new environments is tough. You can train them on physical, real-world data taken from recordings made by humans, but that’s scarce and expensive to collect.Digital simulations are a rapid, scalable way to teach them to do new things, but the robots often fail when they’re pulled out of virtual worlds and asked to do the same tasks in the real one.

The Dogs of Chernobyl Are Experiencing Rapid Evolution, Study Suggests

While the study doesn’t prove that radiation is the cause of these differences, the data provides an important first step in analyzing these irradiated populations, and understanding how they compare to dogs living elsewhere. Animals of all kinds have thrived in humanity’s absence. Living among radiation-resistant fauna are thousands of feral dogs, many of whom are descendants of pets left behind in the speedy evacuation of the area so many years ago.Scientists from the University of South Carolina and the National Human Genome Research Institute have begun examining the DNA of 302 feral dogs found in or around the CEZ to better understand how radiation may have altered their genomes. The biologists theorize that the frogs experienced a beneficial mutation in melanin—pigments responsible for skin color—that helped dissipate and neutralize some of the surrounding radiation. ... The study uncovered that the feral dogs living near the Chernobyl Power Plant showed distinct genetic differences from dogs living only some 10 miles away in nearby Chernobyl City. However, this study provides a template for further investigation into the effects of radiation on larger mammals, as the DNA of dogs roaming the Chernobyl Power Plant and nearby Chernobyl City can be compared to dogs living in non-irradiated areas.

Ahead of the latest installment of the contest, here’s a rundown of all the Major League Eating world records held by Chestnut.I guess when you really think about it, pulled pork sandwiches are basically just shredded hot dogs. It’s fitting that Chestnut holds the only record that could be more American than hot dogs on the Fourth of July.

AI drones are coming for dog owners | The Spectator

Meet the Poopcopter, the world’s first AI-driven drone designed to scoop dog poop. A cleaner, smarter future for dog owners and city streets. According to its inventor, the Poopcopter is the ‘world’s first self-guided dog poop removal system, using a drone, and 3D-printed pickup mechanism.’ The drone has real-time computer vision and machine learning algorithms. One small step for a dog, one giant leap for mankind, is my own take on this. I calculate that I have personally picked up roughly 12,000 bags of poop for my dogs Ringo and Bella. It is a task that I perform without relish but from duty, as I have a certain reputation to uphold here.My old mucker Andrew Neil, lately of this parish, who lives a few hundred kilometres away on the posh side of the Rhône, disclosed on Twitter the other day that when he wishes to signal virtue, he picks up after his dogs, using Canisacs ordered from Amazon. The late Tip O’Neill Jr., former speaker of the US House of Representatives, observed that all politics is local and while he didn’t have it in mind when he said it, dog poop is quintessentially local politics.

Army Testing Robot Dogs Armed with Artificial Intelligence-Enabled Rifles in Middle East | Military.com

The Army has sent at least one "robot dog" armed with an artificial intelligence-enabled gun turret to the Middle East for testing as a fresh counter-drone capability for U.S. service members, service officials confirmed. A U.S. Army Central spokesman told Military.com that the armed robot dog was one of several “non-counter-sUAS” systems tested alongside 15 counter-drone platforms at Red Sands during the September test and that the gun engaged several static ground targets, but declined to elaborate on its potential applications.DEVCOM did not respond to a request for comment. The Defense Department has been gradually incorporating robot dogs into its formations over the last several years.Currently, Q-UGVs perform functions ranging from explosive ordnance disposal; boosting perimeter security at sensitive installations; and enhancing intelligence, surveillance, target acquisition and reconnaissance capabilities for U.S. service members deployed in austere environments, among others. While still relatively new technology, robot dogs have already proven capable of going places inhospitable to human troops and performing tedious jobs such as perimeter patrols longer and without need to rest. But beyond these operations, the Pentagon has increasingly experimented with mounting weapons systems on robot dogs. The Marine Corps, in particular, has tested quadrupedal robots outfitted with both Onyx Industries' SENTRY remote weapon system and the M72 LAW anti-tank rocket launcher, while the Army has considered outfitting mechanized canines with the new 6.8mm XM7 rifle the service recently fielded under its Next Generation Squad Weapon program to replace the M4 carbine.
